Commissioning an Instrument

Commissioning an instrument is very simple. A call may be placed to me at the number below.  All instruments are personally crafted by me. The initial conversations cover some of the basic details of the commission i.e. wood selection (one or two piece back, etc.), the final look of the instrument, set-up details such as neck dimensions, string types, string heights and spacings.

I usually deliver each instrument in person and stay overnight to allow time for the instrument to adjust to the new climate as well as to make any tonal and tactile adjustments necessary for the musician.

Apprentice Instruments

My apprentice, Ray Palmer will be making instruments under my guidance. Ray's principal area of expertise is the viola and it will likely become his signature instrument. Please check back to this site as Ray's instruments will be pictured and offered for sale as they are completed.   Ray is currently working on a viola patterned on the Guarneri in the possession of Pinchas Zukerman.  It is 16 3/8” in length and is one of the finest sounding violas in existence.  Please click here for more information about Ray.
