DETAILS ABOUT THE INSTRUMENT
This Terry Borman instrument is a spectacular Guarnerius-inspired violin delivered to me in the fall of 2004. The sound is dark, balanced and powerful. Under recording microphones, the similarity to Isaac Stern’s Guarnerius sound is uncanny. Visually the violin is stunning and in perfect condition. My photos really don’t do justice to the varnish, wood, and Terry’s workmanship. The antiquing is tasteful and restrained, without the exaggerated look some makers overdo.

With a back length of 352 mm, the slightly smaller dimensions make this violin very easy to play. The neck shape and silky smoothness feel wonderful in the left hand. Shifts feel sure and effortless. It baffles me why more makers don’t pay as much attention as Terry does to the ergonomics and tactile aspects of their violins.

Currently I’m using Vision Solo strings (not their Vision or Titanium variety), which respond great on this instrument. For me they produce a creamier sound, leaning toward a fine older Italian violin. Dominants and Evah Pirazzi strings work well too, if a bit more sizzle in the sound is desired. Terry likes a Westminster E string to "balance" the bridge. Other E strings will give a rounder sound.

If I’d had the option of purchasing a five year old Borman violin back in 2004, I’d have done so immediately. It was a two-year wait for the instrument back then. Like any new instrument, in the first year it required periodic adjustments, including a longer soundpost and one trip back to Terry. This is especially true in a climate like New England where the seasonal changes are profound. In the past two years the violin has really settled in, requiring little except for changing strings. While the sound was excellent from the beginning, it’s easier to get a nice pianissimo now than when it was new. Overall the sound has opened up and also gotten smoother.

At one of the big auctions this past year, I had a chance to compare this violin and another of Terry Borman's violins to many older and more expensive instruments.  Among them was a Vuillaume that sold for close to $200,000.  In terms of sound, ease of response, neck feel, beauty of varnish and wood, and physical condition, there was only one instrument in the entire auction I liked better than Terry's.  It ended up selling for over $600,000 with the buyer's premium.  In short I believe a great modern violin makes enormous sense for most players.  I have the greatest admiration for Terry Borman and his violins.  I am only sorry that financial considerations necessitate putting this instrument up for sale at this time.
